The short answer
Yes, most do. 213 of the 252 California law offices in our directory (85%) say on their own website that the first consultation is free. Just over half, 130 offices (52%), also put the fee arrangement in writing on the site: "no fee unless we win", "no recovery, no fee" or a plain mention of a contingency fee.
We collected these figures from each firm's own website and the State Bar of California's public attorney search, checked on November 5, 2026, across 64 cities from Los Angeles to Fresno. Here's what else you can find out before you pick up the phone.
What firms publish before you call
| What the firm's website says | Offices | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Free consultation | 213 | 85% |
| No fee unless they win / contingency fee | 130 | 52% |
| Available 24/7 | 99 | 39% |
| Spanish spoken | 78 | 31% |
Every one of the 252 offices has an attorney whose State Bar license shows as Active. We look that up for each listing and link the Bar record on the listing page, so you can check it yourself in one click.
The gap between "free consultation" (85%) and a written fee statement (52%) is worth noticing. A firm that doesn't mention fees online may still work on contingency; you only find out on the call. If cost is your worry, ask two things in the first five minutes: what percentage the firm takes, and who pays case costs (expert reviews, medical records, filing fees) if the case doesn't win.
Not every firm takes every kind of case
"Malpractice" covers a lot. Here's what the offices list as their practice areas:
| Case type | Offices | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Medical malpractice | 182 | 72% |
| Nursing home abuse & neglect | 125 | 50% |
| Birth injury | 66 | 26% |
| Misdiagnosis & delayed diagnosis | 39 | 15% |
| Medication errors | 37 | 15% |
| Surgical errors | 35 | 14% |
| Financial elder abuse | 28 | 11% |
| Bedsores (pressure injuries) | 26 | 10% |
| Assisted living neglect | 24 | 10% |
If your case is narrow, the field gets small fast. Only 66 offices name birth injury, and 26 name bedsores. Each listing shows the case types the firm names on its own site, so you can see that before you call. For a parent or grandparent in a care home, see our guide on how to report elder abuse in California, which covers who to call alongside a lawyer.
Experience: about 20 years at the median
For each listing we record the year its attorney was admitted to the California Bar. The median is 20.5 years in practice. 141 offices (56%) have an attorney with 20 or more years, and 24 (10%) have one admitted less than 10 years ago.
Years alone don't tell you much about a lawyer. They do tell you something about what to ask: how many cases like yours the attorney has taken to trial, and who at the firm will actually handle your file.
Eight listings (3%) show a public discipline entry on the attorney's State Bar record. We don't hide that: the Bar link is on every listing page. Our guide on how to check a lawyer in California walks through reading a State Bar profile.
Evenings and weekends
"Available 24/7" on a website usually means someone answers the phone, not that the office is open. The posted office hours tell a different story. 147 offices publish hours on their Google Business Profile:
- 27 are open on Saturday and 19 on Sunday.
- 6 list 24 hours a day, every day.
- On weekdays, 99 close at 5pm. Only 10 stay open past 6pm, and 6 of those are the round-the-clock offices.
If you can only call in the evening or at the weekend, look for the 24/7 line on a listing, and expect a callback from the attorney rather than a consultation on the spot.
Where the options are
| Region | Offices | Free consultation | Spanish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | 75 | 69 | 31 |
| Orange County | 46 | 36 | 15 |
| San Francisco Bay Area | 43 | 36 | 13 |
| San Diego | 38 | 30 | 5 |
| Inland Empire | 33 | 28 | 11 |
| Sacramento | 9 | 8 | 1 |
| Fresno | 8 | 6 | 2 |
Los Angeles has the most offices, and the highest share of offices that say they speak Spanish (31 of 75, 41%). San Diego has 38 offices but only 5 that state Spanish on their site. Sacramento and Fresno have fewer than ten listed offices each.

How we counted
We counted all 252 published listings in the Find Malpractice Lawyers directory on November 6, 2026, using fields we recorded from each firm's own website (free consultation, fee wording, 24/7, Spanish, case types), the State Bar of California attorney search (license status, admission year, public discipline) and each office's Google Business Profile (hours). A firm with several offices counts once per office; the 252 offices belong to 232 firms. "Years in practice" is 2026 minus the admission year of the attorney we checked for that office.
